The social media app Bluesky has seen its user base increase by over 5.5 million since the U.S. Presidential elections as some people leave rival X, which is owned by Elon Musk. For this reason, it continues to improve its service with updates that include the redesign of the Settings interface or new animations, among other features.

Bluesky is working to strengthen its security measures to reduce ‘fake’ profiles and updated its identity theft policy to be more aggressive. Additionally, it is exploring additional options to improve account verification.

They also indicated that they know the importance of identifying which accounts are real “as more users join Bluesky.””Users deserve the trust that the accounts they interact with are authentic,” Bluesky stressed in a thread of publications. In this sense, it announced that it updated its identity theft policy to be more aggressive. Therefore, ‘fake’ accounts and those that appropriate usernames will be eliminated. It also quadrupled the size of its moderation team to act more quickly when analyzing and detecting suspicious accounts.

It was recalled that parody, satire or fan accounts are allowed on the platform, but that they must be identified in the username and biography. Those who do not, therefore, will receive a phishing label. Those accounts that were created with a certain identity only to add followers and then modified with another identity to maintain those ‘followers’ will also be deleted.

Finally, Bluesky acknowledged that it is aware that users want more ways to verify their identity beyond domain verification. For this reason, alternatives are being considered to improve account verification, which will be announced “shortly.”
