The largest law enforcement operation led to the shutdown of Genesis Market, one of the biggest site selling stolen credentials to hackers around the world.

Up to 2 million digital identities have been stolen through a system which collected all kind of information by infecting victim’s devices through viruses or active cyber attacks.

The stolen information was sold as ‘bots’ which were provided to buyers alongside a custom browser that, by mimicking the victim’s browser,  prevented all security measure prompts from being generated, facilitating even further accessibility to all stolen data.

After an investigation started in 2019, the website was shutdown through a combined effort between the Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) and the Joint Cybercrime Action Taskforce (J-CAT). Seventeen national law enforcement authorities also joined the investigation.
